Shopify New Customer Accounts

Shopify's New Customer Accounts are coming, and Ordergroove is updating our Shopify integration to pass all of the benefits onto our merchants. In this article we'll go through what new functionality you can expect, and some points to keep in mind as you upgrade to the new integration.

What is it?

Shopify is rolling out new customer accounts to third party integrations, including Ordergroove. This will affect how your customers login and interact with their Subscription Manager.

This update ties Ordergroove and Shopify closer together and comes with some great benefits:

  • Passwordless login
  • Easy payment updates

Before You Update

  • All modifications made to your Ordergroove Subscription Manager are preserved.
  • There is no Preview option when changing to New Customer Accounts, it will update immediately on your site. We recommend merchants with developer test stores to try it there first.
    • You can toggle back to classic accounts at any time.
  • Ordergroove’s Log in on behalf of feature is not available  with new customer accounts, since new customer accounts does not support multipass.
  • You will want to update any places where you mention a login URL, such as your Klaviyo or Attentive flows. You can get this URL from your Shopify admin under Settings, Customer accounts, URL.

How to Upgrade

Upgrading is easy, just request a spot in the alpha test first, and then toggle the setting in Shopify.

⚠️ Warning

Do not enable New Customer Accounts in Shopify until Ordergroove confirms you are included in the Alpha and that your store is properly set up. You will lose access to the Subscription Manager if completed out of order.

  1. Sign up for the updated Shopify new customer accounts x Ordergroove integration. Ordergroove will reach out and let you know when you are eligible to upgrade.
  2. Once our team confirms you are eligible to upgrade, follow this developer guide to update your Subscription Manager theme to enable New Customer Accounts payment edits from within the Subscription Manager.
  3. Login to your Shopify store, and go to Settings > Customer accounts > Customer accounts and Save. Note: this is also where you get the new customer login URL. It’s at the bottom of the page under the URL section.
  4. Exit the Settings menu, and from the main menu click Content > Menus and then select Customer account main menu from the list.
  5. Add a new menu item with a Subscriptions label and link to /apps/subscriptions/manage
  6. Confirm everything is working properly. Navigate to your online store and log in. Once logged in you should see Subscriptions in the top menu navigation. Click Subscriptions to navigate to your site's subscription manager.
Note: if you are seeing a message that says "Unable to load subscription interface",  try updating the menu URL to "<YOUR-STORE-DOMAIN>.com/apps/subscriptions/manage". If that doesn't work, please submit a support ticket to our team.
