Managing Payment Methods in Shopify New Accounts

Once you enable Shopify New Customer Accounts, your customers’ payment methods will be stored in their Profile page. Customers can see all of their saved payment methods on their profile page. They can also see which subscriptions are associated with their payment methods.

Updating Payment Methods in Shopify New Accounts

If a customer wants to update a payment method for a subscription, they must edit an existing payment method, or add a new payment method before deleting the old one.

We recommend educating your customers on the correct order of operations to minimize frustration and support tickets sent to your team. You can include a disclaimer in a welcome email that says something like ‘If you need to change the payment method used for your subscriptions, make sure to add or modify a card first. You can’t delete the only payment method associated with a subscription.’

Supporting Customer Requests

If you get support requests from customers who can’t add a new payment method, you can fix it for them on the back end. All you have to do is trigger a Payment Update Email in Shopify, and then the customer will get sent a link to add their payment method:

  1. Log in to the Shopify Admin
  2. Search for the customer in question
  3. Locate their payment method, and Send link to update card.

The Update Email

Your customer receives the Payment Update Email with a View payment information button. All they have to do is follow the URL and update their card:
