Flex Incentive Builder (Beta)

Ordergroove's Flex Incentives feature offers the most expansive options on the market for applying discounts and incentives to your subscription program. Incentive Builder enables you to configure these flexible incentives self-serve, tailoring promotions to better suit your business goals and customer behavior.

This article provides a detailed explanation of the different types of Flex Incentives you can configure through Incentive Builder.

Note: The Incentive Builder is now in Open Beta, and we're excited to continue improving the experience for you. Please reach out to your Ordergroove CSM with any questions or feedback.

Automatic vs. On-Demand Incentives

This article largely focuses on the Automatic incentives available through the Incentive Builder, but we've also consolidated our On-Demand incentives for self-serve turnkey configuration as well. Here are the high level differences between the two types of Flex Incentives we offer:

  • Automatic Incentives: This category includes both the Default incentive and Conditional incentives. These are rules-based incentives that are automatically applied to a customer's subscription order.
    • Default Incentive: This is the baseline incentive that all customers receive unless their purchase qualifies for a conditional incentive. It is a flat-rate discount applied to all subscription items, such as a 15% discount on all initial and recurring orders.
    • Conditional Incentives: These are specific, targeted discounts that are applied only when predetermined conditions are met. They are "if/then" incentives based on rulesets that you create.
  • On-Demand Incentives: These are a separate category of incentives that are also managed through the Flex Incentives product - just within a separate tab (see below). These incentives are typically applied for retention or appeasement use cases by your store's Customer Service/Support agents. They currently include Discount Codes (Shopify) and Cancel Flow Retention Incentives.

Default Incentive

The Default Incentive is the baseline discount customers receive simply for being part of your subscription program. It's automatically applied to each subscription order. For example, you might offer a 15% discount for a subscriber's initial order and all recurring subscription orders. If you're already familiar with Ordergroove promotions (legacy), you're good to go.

All merchants can manage their recurring program-wide incentive through Ordergroove.

Recurring Order Incentive (ROI):

  • % off item-level or order-level
  • $ off item-level or order-level

Different Initial vs. Recurring Default Incentives (Shopify only)

If you're a Shopify merchant, you also have the ability to set a different Initial Order Incentive (IOI) from your Recurring Order Incentive (ROI). This allows you to tailor your enrollment and retention strategies. For instance, you could provide subscribers with a 10% off initial offer incentive, but then offer a 20% recurring offer incentive to boost program retention.

The configuration possibilities are as follows:

Initial Order Incentive (IOI):

  • % off item-level
  • $ off item-level

Recurring Order Incentive (ROI):

  • % off item-level or order-level
  • $ off item-level or order-level

Conditional Incentives

With Incentive Builder, you can create advanced rulesets to dictate what promotions, discounts, or incentives you provide to your users. For example, you could:

  • Tailor a discount based on which Product Group a SKU belongs to.
  • Incentivize users to get to their 3rd, 5th, 7th order by offering an incentive on every Nth Order.

There are always two concepts to keep in mind when structuring a Flex Incentives profile:

  1. The condition that must be true in order to trigger the incentive being provided, or, what you're rewarding a subscriber for.
    1. Ex: what product they're subscribed to, how many orders of that product they've received, etc.
  2. The incentive to provide, or what you're rewarding a subscriber with
    1. Ex: percentage % off, dollars $ off, a gift with purchase, free shipping, store credits, etc.

Additionally, Ordergroove supports combining multiple conditions to apply a single incentive. For example, you could combine a Customer Group and a Product Group to give your VIPs a discount on specific products.

Here is the list of currently available conditions and the incentive types they support in Incentive Builder. Visit our developer documentation for more details on how they are applied.
