Upgrades to the Shopify integration have enabled customer-viewable benefits during checkout – like how much they’ll save on future subscription orders with your incentives – and the ability to upgrade to a subscription from a one-time purchase.
Both encourage customers to subscribe or stay subscribed, boosting conversion to your highest LTV customer base. These enhancements are available in Early Access - talk to your Ordergroove CSM for more details.
Our integration supports adding these benefits to the Shopify Checkout experience via Shopify’s Checkout Editor. This article details how to set up these functionalities on your store.
ℹ️ Shopify Plus Required
Displaying recurring benefits and upselling to subscriptions in Shopify Checkout requires a Shopify Plus plan.
Activating Discount Functions Via Flex Incentives
Ordergroove's latest version of Flex Incentives allows for self-serve configuration within RC3. For merchants on Shopify, this also means that we've enhanced how the subscription discounts are applied during checkout. Rather than rely on Selling Plans, or previously Shopify Scripts, we now use Shopify Functions to create the discounts in your store.
When you publish an incentives profile from the self-service tool, it will create a discount in Shopify that looks like the image below. Your site is now fully functional with the discounts you've configured, even if you don't follow the additional steps below to update your checkout page.
Updating Your Shopify Checkout Page
Once you've published an incentives profile and your subscription incentives are appearing in your store as shown above, you are now ready to review and update the display of these incentives within checkout.
Part 1: Displaying The Checkout Page Discounts (Shopify)
Discounts will be applied at the item level and/or the order level based on what you've configured in Ordergroove. No work is required for you to add this messaging to your checkout.

Part 2: Messaging The Recurring Incentives (Ordergroove)
If your recurring incentive is different than the initial incentive for a particular item, you can add Ordergroove's item incentive messaging to be transparent to your subscribers.
- Navigate to your store's checkout editor blocks section.
- Under "Ordergroove Subscriptions" click the plus sign next to "Subscription Item Incentives" and then click "Checkout" to add it to your checkout page.
- Select the toggle to "Include block in Shop Pay" so that this messaging also shows up when customers check out with Shop Pay.
- Click Save.
Example:
This text will show as one of the following based on what you've configured in your incentives profile:
- X% off future orders
- $X off future orders
- + Benefits on future orders
- This text is used in the case you've configured an incentive that varies on specific orders - for example, a free gift on the 4th order.
- Product-Specific discounts and basic Subscribe & Save discounts will display exact % off.
Part 3: Upsell From One-Time To Subscription In Checkout (Ordergroove)
In addition to displaying recurring incentives, enabling the Ordergroove block from Part 2 allows customers to opt-in to subscription from within checkout for any items that are currently set for one-time delivery.
ℹ️ Upsell From Subscription Alpha
The ability to Upsell from Checkout is a separate Alpha Ordergroove is running. If you'd like to add the functionality to Shopify Checkout please reach out and we'll enable it for your store.
Example:
This text will show as one of the following based on what you've configured in your incentives profile:
- "Make it a subscription" (if there is no savings on today's order)
- "Save [X%/$X] today when you subscribe!"
Part 4: Modifying The Recurring Subtotal Copy (Shopify)
Since Ordergroove's Flex Incentives platform has more flexibility than what Shopify can execute out of the box, Shopify will often display an incorrect estimate for the recurring subtotal of a subscription checkout.
Example Without Customization:
We recommend going to "Edit default theme content", then "Checkout & system" and making the following changes. The examples below are based on the Horizon defaults:
| Field | Default Value | Recommended Value |
| Recurring subtotal label | Recurring subtotal | This order contains a subscription. |
| Recurring total tooltip | Does not include shipping, tax, duties, or any applicable discounts. | Recurring orders will include subscription savings. |
| Recurring total multiple label | This order has a recurring charge for multiple items. | This order contains multiple subscriptions. |
| Recurring totals | total_price every interval | *enter a space to remove |
